River has extensive clinical and educational experience in Asperger Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorders. What is unique about River’s Asperger/Autism program is how it threads an individualized social curriculum throughout each child’s therapy to enhance the acquisition and functional use of communication, sensory processing, motor abilities, cognition, and social interactions. Children’s needs vary greatly, therefore, we customized your child's therapy in order to find an intervention model individually fit to optimize learning. At River, we combine Communication and Social Skills Training with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. We use several techniques aimed at curbing problem behaviors, such as interrupting, obsessions, meltdowns or angry outbursts, as well as developing skills such as recognizing feelings and coping with anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy usually focuses on training a child to recognize a troublesome situation — such as a new place or an event with lots of social demands — and then select a specific learned strategy to cope with the situation. Our therapists use real-life situations such as taking a child to the food court or game room in the mall to help them cope with social & peer interaction and every day, real-life situations such as ordering food and eating in a crowded, noisy environment. At River, we also believe that parents, caregivers and siblings play a critical role in the therapy of a child with Asperger’s or Autism, and therefore offer workshops, education, and training to caregivers and family members to create a complete support system for your child.
